There are three villages in the area where the "Proyecto Los Chilchos & La Meseta" is active: Los Chilchos, Anazco Pueblo and Canaan.
The area is on the border of the departments of Amazonas and San Martin, in north-eastern Peru.
The three villages can only be reached by foot or on horseback. The trail that is most often used begins in the small country town of Leimebamba. From here it is a walk of approximately 12 to 18 hours to Los Chilchos, in eastern direction. If we continue our path another one and a half day to the south-east, we arrive in Anazco Pueblo. Three hours further we finally are in the last village, Canaan.
This area was a long time ago occupied by the members of the Chachapoya-culture, and we still can find their traces everywhere in the dense forest. On the high cliffs there are small funeral houses, possibly still containing mummies and Chachapoya artefacts. But the collaborators of the project have also found traces of older cultures.
One of the Inka-roads, the people that conquered the Chachapoya some 500 years ago, also passes through the area. The Inka have "recycled" some of the Chachapoya-gravehouses and there are also remains of buildings and baths.
