ONG UCUMARI organises since 2007, in collaboration with the Dutch travel organisation "Sawadee" voyages to the project. The nine-day hiking-tour is heavy, but you will get something special in return! A trip through an almost undisturbed area, accompanied by local men and an English-speaking guide that knows much about the nature and culture of the area. You travel by (docile) mules, and some parts can be done on foot.
You must realise that this is the real "wild" nature, so the animals will not be sitting along the road, ready to be observed and photographed by tourists. One needs much patient and luck to observe mammals, but there are special birds and plants all around you. For more information, please have a look at the (Dutch) website of Sawadee.
Many rare bird species live in this area (see elsewhere on this website), and for fanatic bird-watchers it is possible to organise special birding tours. On those trips you will not be accompanied by an English-speaking guide (although it might be possible to find one for additional costs) , but we will arrange some very good local guides that can bring you to the best places to see birds. They will take care of the mules and even cook for you. You can choose to return every evening to one of our lodges, or sleep somewhere in the forest or on the fields under a piece of plastic! Remember that this is only possible during the dry season that is roughly between April and November.
