Through an increase of the coffee-production we hope to stimulate a sustainable economic development of the collaborating villages. UCUMARI not only supplies technical and financial (micro-credits) support, but also agreed to purchase the coffee for a good and fair price. The financial certainty of the local communities that results from this approach has several advantages. 
Firstly we improve on the way the access of the people to important matters as medical care and education. 
Secondly the people will be less dependent on cattle-breeding, and they will stop increasing or even decrease their livestock. Cattle-breeding has devastating consequences for the forest, and if we do not counteract this we can be certain that the important cloud-forests in this area will have disappeared in a few years. 
The local people that collaborate to the project (more than 80% of the population, and the number is increasing) have promised that they, in exchange for the faire price that they receive from us for the coffee, will stop hunting and cut down primary forest.  They also realise that the conservation of the forest around their villages is important for their future.
