Research showed that the area around Los Chilchos and La Meseta has a high diversity of mammal species. The area is an important sanctuary for (critically) endangered animal species as the yellow-tailed woolly monkey (Lagothrix flavicauda), the long-haired spider monkey (Ateles belzebuth), the Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus) and the jaguar (Panthera onca).

Spider monkeys climb every evening over the steep cliffs to find a safe sleeping-spot.
New species of small mammals, often rodents that are endemic for a small area, are discovered at almost every survey that is conducted. The protection of this territory therefore is very important for the conservation of biodiversity on our planet.
A recent (Peruvian) report on the presence of mammals in the area can be found here.
